If you have signed up to volunteer (or even if you haven’t but want to) please read the following for tips, directions and details for the day:

• Time:  9 a.m. – noon
• Parking:  Park in the Rivergate Park lot against the fence. Head north on Merwin from Columbus Road (by Sainato’s), go through the gate onto the Metroparks property, turn right and park against the fence.  They will lock the gate at 2:30 p.m.
• Meet:  Meet in front of Sainato’s restaurant  (1852 Columbus Rd. Cleveland, OH. 44113).  See directions link below.
• Lunch:  Pizza will be provided at noon in Hart Crane Park (on Merwin across from Sainato’s).
• Clothing:  It will be cool tomorrow morning (50 F), so dress appropriately (layers) so you can adjust as needed.  The gloves that are provided are not  extremely robust, so you might want to bring your own.

When you arrive, please come to the supply distribution point in front of Sainatos and do the following:

• Sign RiverSweep waiver
• Sign in on WRRA Volunteer Sheet with Frank Campbell to record Volunteer hours.  Note:  you must also sign out when you are done.
• Pick up T-shirt (saw them today; they are Sweet!)
• Pick up garbage bags and gloves

We will fan out across the Columbus Road Peninsula.  We encourage people to gather in groups that mix new WRRA folks with existing WRRA folks.  The entire peninsula is fair game.  You will be heading north towards Settlers landing along Columbus, Fall , or Merwin (on other side of boathouse near our entrance).   There are also other nearby areas if needed.

This effort has been very successful over the 24 years of its history.   The amount of trash collected drops every year.  That’s the goal!

If you’re near the river, keep an eye out for Flotsam and Jetsam, the team of boats that were designed to remove debris from the Cuyahoga.  2013 will be their first full season of operation.

Join your fellow WRRA rowers as we spend a morning removing trash from the areas bordering the Cuyahoga River on the Columbus Road Peninsula that is home to our boathouse.  This event of the Ohio Canal Corridor targets the areas along the Cuyahoga, the Ohio and Erie Canalway and the Towpath Trail.   Nearly 1,000 volunteers have participated in this effort in years past, collecting 10-12 tons of trash each year.

After the cleanup a celebratory free luncheon is held from noon – 2:00 p.m. at Hart Crane Park (next to Columbus Road Bridge and Sainato’s).

The first 1,000 volunteers also get an awesome T-shirt designed by George Coghill starring the rowing frog (see left).

Our repaired and refurbished shells will be arriving back from the repair shop in Michigan, ready to have a great Summer with us. From 9 a.m. – Noon we are having a welcome back party to get the shells ready to be rowed this summer! We need lots of volunteers to get the boats off the trailer, rerigged and up on the racks in the boathouse. Of course, many hands make light work … if we are done rigging early, we go home early.

This is not your normal party, what should you bring?

1. A 7/16″ wrench or two, and some metric wrenches if you have them
2. A smile!

Here is the official word from Tim Marcovy, Chair of the CRF Safety Committee. Read carefully and if your crew meets the requirements you can get out on the water as of today!

A request was made to the CRF Safety Committee to consider making a temporary exception to the application of the Safety Manual’s Cold Water Rule (Sec. D.7).  The Committee met this afternoon and considered the anticipated air temperature and the temperature of the water in the river at the dock over the last several days.

It was the decision of the Committee that an exception to the Cold Water Rule will be granted, and regular rowing rules will apply, effective April 5, 2013, with the following restrictions:

1. The exception is granted for rowing in the river only, upstream of the NS-1 Bridge.  This means that the Cold Water Rule still applies to anyone rowing in the Lake inside of the breakwall.  DON’T GO OUT INTO THE LAKE WITHOUT A LAUNCH AND IN COMPLIANCE WITH  ALL OTHER REQUIREMENTS OF THE COLD WATER RULE.
2. The exception to the Cold Water Rule only applies from sunup to sunset (go to http://bit.ly/YXYzlK to find sunrise and sunset times).  DON’T ROW WITHOUT A LAUNCH AND AND IN COMPLIANCE WITH ALL OTHER REQUIREMENTS OF THE COLD WATER RULE BEFORE SUNRISE OR AFTER SUNSET.

This exception applies to all programs.

Enjoy a drink and a bit of food while learning about the sport of rowing with Cleveland’s adult rowing club.  There will be a short presentation on rowing, tours of the boathouse and opportunity to meet some current WRRA rowers and ask any questions you may have.

The Meet and Greet begins at 6:00 p.m., with information sessions at 6:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.

WRRA encourages all potential new rowers to participate in a Learn To Row session — a one day course which teaches the basics of rowing and allows participants two on-the-water rowing sessions. Learn To Row sessions are offered all Saturdays and Sundays in April. The Cleveland Rowing Foundation is seeking a Maintenance Director for its boathouse located at 1003 British Street, Cleveland, Ohio. The Maintenance Director is responsible for keeping boathouse equipment and facilities in good working order, including maintenance and minor repair of launches, outboard engines, and ergometers, as well as minor repair to building facilities. The Maintenance Director also is responsible for coordination and pick-up/delivery of fuel and equipment requiring major repair with outside vendors.
