Happy 2012!—A Season Preview
While it is just the beginning of February, warm weather and WRRA’s return to rowing are really just around the corner. WRRA committee members, board, president and coach are busy planning for a great 2012 season and beyond. We will build upon the momentum started in 2010 and 2011; continuing with our diverse and strong rowing programs and varied communication strategies. From the 2011 surveys we know that coaching, program development, and equipment are near and dear to your hearts and we are paying serious attention to these areas and anticipate significant action.
- Your Feedback & Questions
- January 27th, 2012
-
After our inaugural season Rivergate Park, we’ve been taking a look at the things did well and more importantly, the things we could do better. One item we’re focusing on is improving communications to our members about the myriad items associated with WRRA and the Cleveland Rowing Foundation boathouse. With a large increase in new WRRA members last year, sometimes we forget what new folks don’t know (opportunities to row more, volunteering, membership options). We’ll be sending out a newsletter shortly that will be one step towards providing clarity and understanding on some of those items.
We’re also looking for your feedback and questions on items you’re interested in or perhaps aren’t clear on. Feel free to e-mail us at info@westernreserverowing.com.
- WRRA Maintenance Day at the Boathouse
- January 23rd, 2012
-
Date: Saturday February 4
Time: 9 am – noon
Place: Rivergate Boathouse
Contact: volunteer@westernreserverowing.com
The first of seven WRRA volunteer maintenance days for 2012 is Saturday, Feb 4th. Over the course of the year our maintenance tasks will be focused on the boathouse, docks and other rowing related infrastructure. General grounds-keeping tasks will be hired out (lawn care, etc). In this way we hope to utilize your time on tasks more closely associated with rowing. Your assistance on these maintenance days is vital to maintaining our boathouse while minimizing the cost of rowing.
Volunteerism is an integral part of the structure of Western Reserve Rowing Association. Those who volunteer gain a greater understanding of how our organization operates, and you’ll develop an enhanced connectedness to WRRA and your fellow members. We value and respect your time and will make every effort to use it wisely.
The next volunteer maintenance day will not occur until June! Please contact us at volunteer@westernreserverowing.com to let us know you can assist from 9 am – 12 noon on Saturday, February 4th. Thanks!

- Winter Work Outs
- December 1st, 2011
-
We had a wonderful November but the cold is coming to Cleveland and many of you will be looking for more indoor work outs. WRRA has reserved the boathouse ergs from 6:30-8:00 pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays and 7:00 am-9:00 am on Saturdays. We have had these informal sessions for several years now; rowers pick a joint work out so we can motivate each other and share the pain. WRRA members who have paid for full year are welcome to come. There is a dedicated group who go down to erg and they would love to share the pain. Please note that these are informal uncoached work outs with no specific programming involved- dependent upon rower volunteers.
- We are dependent upon a Safety Qualified rower (SQL 2) to open and close the boathouse. The erging group will try to have SQL 2s volunteer for all the dates. However individuals may have work issues at last minute, or Cleveland weather may interfere with the plans. So there may be a session where there is no one to open the boathouse (or stay and close the boathouse) so we would be unable to erg. We are trying to prevent this by working on an efficient way to have late session cancellation notice but it is not in place yet.
- There is a limited number of functioning ergs at the boathouse; right now close to 20. The ergs are available on a first come first served basis during our reserved times.
